Dark pools are an ominous-sounding term for private exchanges or forums for trading securities; unlike stock exchanges, dark pools are not accessible by the investing public. Also known as “dark pools of liquidity,” they are so named for their complete lack of transparency. Dark pools came about primarily to facilitate block trading by institutional investors, who did not wish to impact the markets with their large orders and consequently obtain adverse prices for their trades.
– ’An introduction to Dark Pools’ By Elvis Picardo
Dark Pools is an emerging format of secret, algorithmic stock trading with an increasing impact on global economics. Based on the method of 'semantic fields', Synsmaskinen have created an art project that ’bounces’ off the opaque surface of the Dark Pools and shapes a reflective universe, part fiction, part wild research. 2061 INMORAL LIDOS explores this fundamentally closed system of financial value and power.
In a year-long artistic investigation of the phenomena of Dark Pools and their principal inaccesibility Discoteca Flaming Star, Jacobi and Clementsen have produced a pool of texts, derived from a method of automatization, the ’semantic field’. The texts ’bounces’ off the opaque surface of the Dark Pools and shapes a reflective universe, part fiction, part ’wild research’. These texts are installed as a performative scenario, that attempts to discuss the phenomena of the Dark Pools, not by revealing their hidden powers, but rather by investigating how these structures cast enigmatic shadows unto their surroundings. The principal in-accessibility gives rise to all sorts of conspirational fantasies – it is these pools of twisted fantasies that is explored in 2061 INMORAL LIDOS.
